Interview with the Fantasy Fangirls aka Nicole and Lexi
You guys I still can’t believe this is possible. I was able to interview the one and only Fantasy Fangirls AKA Nicole and Lexi. As always, I’m going to have a blurb with some info about them as well as all kinds of links for you to connect with them on their various socials, and shop their store (which has had a major glow up), as well as sign up for Fantasy Fanclub where you can join all the chaos in the discord with us as well as other fun benefits. Ahh! So excited to share this with all of you!
About the Fantasy Fangirls:
“Welcome welcome welcome to the Fantasy Fangirls podcast- where two sisters dive deeeeeeeeep into beloved fantasy lore, characters, themes, and more!
I’m Lexi, the older sister and fantasy lore nerd.
and I’m Nicole, the younger sister and romantic at heart.”
If you’re in the bookish community, especially if you’re a Romantasy fan you’ll know these words all too well. The podcast was started by two sisters, Lexi and Nicole, in September of 2023 with their deep dive of Fourth Wing. The podcast has since grown to over 10 million downloads. Since Fourth Wing they have done deep dives of Iron Flame, the entire ACOTAR series, and recently completed their deep dive of Onyx Storm. The next series they are covering will be the Kindreds Curse Saga by Penn Cole.
One thing is for sure I can’t talk about the amazing Fantasy Fangirls without talking about the amazing community they’ve built. Through the Fantasy Fanclub you get access to their private discord channel which allows you to connect with others who also love the pod and all things bookish. When I joined I created a subgroup for my local community and couldn’t believe how quickly I found others and let me tell you those girls have quickly become my family. So Fantasy Fangirls isn’t just about a podcast or “smut books” as some would like to say. It’s about community and connecting with others.

What has been the hardest thing about becoming well known/celebrities. how has day to day life changed?
- Its funny as podcasters because so much of what we do is on our own or just with each other. Every week we write the outlines on our own and record in a room with just the two of us. So the day to day still feels very much like we’re just in our own little world, and then we open our Discord or our social media platforms and are reminded how much bigger this is than just the two of us. It’s honestly the best reminder every day that when things are hard, or a part of an outline just feels impossible, or we hit up against a new level new devil of business, going into the community reminds us just how worth it this is. As for the hardest part, it would definitely getting thick skin. We have so many wonder fans that we are beyond grateful for, and there are definitely some people who watch one video or make a comment about our analysis, our personalities, our looks, our voices, you name it, theres been a negative comment about it. There’s absolutely days where those comments that people think we’ll either never read or they are just feeling brave behind a keyboard, they hit hard sometimes.
Besides bracelets was kind of gifts do you love getting from fans?
- Anytime and we truly mean anytime someone takes a moment to give us a gift whether its a sticker or a t-shirt or a hand crocheted dragon or a wooden carving of our logo or a stuffed Narwhal (his name is Bartholomew and he lives on my bed), it means the literal world to us. Both of us have many fan gifts on our background bookshelves and we also have a huge box of letters. Whenever we have a bad day or when it feels like we’re pulling teeth to get an outline done, we read them and get that reminder how much this show means to others.
You guys have created some great playlists for the books you deep dive, which is your favorite or favorite to create?
- This is such a hard question to answer because I love them all. Onyx Storm was really fun because it was really collaborative, I had a lot of help from our FanClub members. I think my favorite keeps coming back to A Court of Mist and Fury. It’s my favorite book and much of what the FMC goes through in that book, I felt really connected to so I had been planning out that playlist for… months! Whenever I need a boost of creativity, I will listen to that playlist.
What author or celebrity would you love to work with if you were given the chance?
- We have been so fortunate to have worked with so many dream authors like Callie Hart (Quicksilver), Sarah A. Parker (When the Moon Hatched), Hannah Nicole Maeher (Assistant to the Villian), Charissa Weaks (Witch Collector), Jennifer L Armentrout (From Blood and Ash) and more! Right now in our deep dive of the Kindred’s Curse Saga, we are working directly with the author, Penn Cole, even having a segment called “phone a Penn”. We have interviewed Rebecca Yarros and she’s a BLAST; to collaborate with her on a deep dive would be a dream even if most of the answers she’d give us would be a loving “no”. We would love the opportunity to interview Sarah J Maas someday, especially as we plan to cover ACOTAR 6, whenever it comes out!
describe your favorite type of character to read about? Do you have one absolute die hard favorite character?
- There’s three different answers to this question.
- #1 an FMC who is strong and badass, but also relatable even in her hardships and most importantly flawed! We love when a FMC makes decisions we wouldn’t or has a moment of taking an L on the show. It makes them real and so fun to read.
- #2 an MMC who is 3D first and always. They are so much more than just “the most handsome man the FMC has ever seen”, they have a rich backstory, they make mistakes, and most importantly, they both stand on their own and allow the FMC to do the same and bring out the best in each other.
- #3 The fun character will always be up on our list of favorites! One of the best parts of deep diving Onyx Storm was Ridoc, pulling out his one liners, his funny moments and also his sincerity made him one of our favorite characters to deep dive!
Is there anything you miss about your “old life” and what would you change about your life now if you could?
- Theres a part of us that misses having more time in our days that was much easier to have in our “old life”. Especially Lexi with previously being a stay at home mom, it’s been an adjustment moving into being a full-time working parent. If we could change anything about our lives right now, it would be being better at taking care of ourselves, and having a much more in place work life balance. The nice thing is that we are both actively working on that change because we know it’s a must to keep FFG going long term.
What has been the best/worst part of working together? You compliment each other so well but are there ever times when you butt heads?
- Yes and no! We both come from a family of heavy communicators, so whenever we “butt heads”, it is resolved really quickly because we express how we’re feeling and we both are very good about always being open to hearing the other's experience. But the best part is that it rarely happens because, to our own surprise, we are a really good team. Everything I (Nicole) am not as strong in, Lexi is a powerhouse and vise versa! The best part of this experience is getting to work with each other and be constantly inspired by the other person.
How do you manage a work/life balance in this field?
- For a long time, frankly, we didn’t. For the first year(ish) we were both working round the clock and with Lexi also being a mom of two toddlers, you can imagine the lack of balance we felt. It’s been in the last few months, as our team as been built out, that the balance has started to show its head. We now are working towards having weekends or nights off, even taking vacations or breaks, its something we didn’t think we could do when it was all hands on deck.
How much do you remember from your fan encounters and how much do those little moments of connection mean to you?
- We say this from the bottom of our hearts, those moments with fans mean everything to us. They are the moments we revisit when things get hard, we’ve had fans tell us stories that have made us laugh, cry, or both at the same time. This community is our world and while it can be hard to remember every interaction, there are certain facts or anecdotes or crazy topics we somehow get on or epic cosplays that are ingrained in us and we get so excited if we interact with those people again.
Where do you see FFG in 10 years?
- We see FFG as an all inclusive media brand. Imagine a fantasy buzzfeed for quizzes and fun, a wiki for lore and guides, an IGN-like site for reviews and news, etc. It is a dream for us and we are very lucky that it miiiiight happen sooner than 10 years (crosses all fingers and toes).
I have to ask, is there anything you guys can maybe tease about the future of FFG that you already know?
- I think this might be the first time we’re sharing this publicly, in the next year, we are actively working towards expanding the Fantasy Fangirls umbrella to include other podcasts and content - but that’s all we can say for now, muahaha!
Thank you so much for reading!!
P.S special shoutout to @ffgorlandosquad : my girls @moonray.made @reidbakkar @heather_rene @snarkydragonfan @throneoffantasies we love to talk all things FFG and Romantasy.
